Shortcuts for Raising emus # 1: Eggs and chicks
Raising emus can be demanding, but there are some techniques that can affect considerable positive about the breeder and the bird! From the egg and move forward …
Emu eggs:
The emu is the winter starts around October and through March. A hen may lay 20 eggs, or as many as 50. They lay eggs every three days, and late in the evening. If possible, it is best to collect the eggs about two hours after dark.
This will prevent birds accidentally damage the eggs with their nails, etc. It is very common to find holes in eggs that have been punched by their fingernails because birds are mainly located along fences and around corners.
Eggs can be stored up to 4-5 weeks if they are kept around 50 degrees. Someranchers use a wine cooler for it. Wineries works perfectly, as they can maintain a higher temperature higher than a refrigerator.
The actual embryo (of a fertile egg) is a spec on the dark yellow in initially. As it is incubated, the embryo develops into a chick egg white. Forms around the yolk of chicken and it is inside the chick when it hatches. Chick saw the yellow of the early days and did not need water or feed. Both should be available, but the chick does food is necessary at first.
Eggs were made to protect the inside of chicken and the design is very efficient. They are difficult to easy to get in and out by design. Chicken breaks through the shell by turning its beak to the side several times until the shell weakens and breaks.
You can actually hear the chirping of the chicks in the egg of a couple of days before they hatch!
Emu Chicks Handling:
Chicks that hatched just need to be left in the hatcher for about 12 to 24 hours before to be moved to a brooder box. An incubator is a box long box (6 feet or more), narrow and can be made of plywood. He just needs heat available at one end. In this way, the chicks can get closer to the heat if they need or they can move on they prefer a comfortable distance.
The brooder box must also have the power (crumble) and water available. Chicks can stand and walk in the brooder box and it's good for them. The sooner after hatching, the better. In nature, they walk time.
They should be moved to the barn after a day or two. The best arrangement barn is small "cabins" of about 8 'x 8'. It takes the heat available here also .. Heat lamps are the best and probably the safest. We hung three 250 watt heat lamps in each cabin and our barn has six cabins.
Here, the chicks can actually run around a little and make the corresponding year. When their give access to the outdoors, do a little at a time so they can find their way iNAND the barn. Each car must have a narrow "run" stretching about60 to 80 feet. At first, give them only six to eight feet long, and add ten feet orso every few days. giving them more Track gradually makes possible for the chicks learn to go inside the barn of their own until night.
The "runs" can easily be made from PVC plastic panels. They can be picked up at the end of the season for cleaning the area is easier.
Again, the shortcuts do better for the farmer and the birds!
